Hope Solo: Female Goalie's 30-day Suspension Linked to "Belligerent" Behavior
U.S. Soccer has announced that they will suspend Hope Solo for a minimum of 30 days. The suspension comes shortly after the goalie's husband, Jerramy Stevens was arrested Monday morning for driving under the influence (DUI). However, U.S. Soccer did not specify the cause of the suspension.
"During our current national team camp, Hope made a poor decision that has resulted in a negative impact on U.S. Soccer and her teammates," U.S. coach Jill Ellis said in a statement. "We feel at this time it is best for her to step away from the team."
Although Solo was not arrested and is not facing any charges, TMZ reported that Solo was "acting belligerent." She reportedly videotaped the Manhattan Beach police after they stopped their car at around 1:30 a.m. Stevens was driving without headlights. The police have not commented on Solo's behavior at all.
After the suspension was announced, Solo, 33, released a statement that read, "I accept and respect the federation's decision, and more importantly, I apologize for disappointing my teammates, coaches and the federation who have always supported me. I think it's best for me to take a break, decompress from the stress of the last several months, and come back mentally and physically ready to positively contribute to the team."
The drunk driving incident comes six days after Solo's domestic abuse charges were dismissed. The Olympian was facing two counts of fourth-degree assault for a fight involving her sister and nephew.
Solo will miss two exhibition games in Europe during her suspension. After 30 days, U.S. Soccer will review her suspension and determine whether or not she will be eligible to return to the team.
The team is currently preparing for the World Cup, which starts on June 8.
