An Indian man was bitten to death by his friend's pet camel because he was too close to the animal.

45-year old Govind Trivedi, a builder in India, was attacked by his friend's pet camel when he strayed too close to the animal. The camel bit Trivedi on the head and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Another man, Phoola Mena, who had been tasked with taking care of the camel, was also attacked and injured by the camel while he was trying to save Trevedi, The Daily Mail  reported.

The incident took place late Sunday night in the Indian city of Ahmedabad, in Gujarat province. Witnesses at the scene reported that at the time of the attack, the camel was tied up next to a road.

The authorities are now looking into the camel's owner, Lalisinh Rajput, to evaluate if he had been negligent about taking care of the animal.

Rajput reportedly left his animal tied up next to the main road when he left to go to a nearby market. When the victim Trivedi arrived,  Mena, who was hired by the owner to keep an eye on the animal, was sleeping.

According to one of the witnesses, Kalida Waghela, Trivedi was known to be an alcoholic and had apparently been drinking when he arrived at the scene. Waghela said "On Sunday night, Trivedi strayed near the camel on his way home. The camel got irritated and attacked Trivedi; fixing its jaws on Trivedi's head."

Locals and Mena were woken up from their sleep by Trivedi's cries and they immediately ran to help, but by the time they were present at the scene, there was nothing they could do. It was too late.

The camel then attacked Mena while he was trying to save Trivedi

Mena claims that the villagers attacked and beat him when they realised Trivedi was dead, accusing him of not being able to protect Trivedi.

The authorities have not made their final decision about charging the owner with negligence, but the police said that the incident was recorded as accidental death.
