Facebook is on a hiring spree and there could be many reasons. Virtual reality job openings are listed on Facebook's career page site and the company recently hired much of the design team from Teehan + Lax, the firm behind the blogging platform Medium.

Virtual Reality

Virtual reality is what Facebook thinks might be the next big thing. Almost a year since Facebook acquired Oculus Rift for $2 billion, signs show that the company is putting virtual reality development into high gear.

Facebook recently listed 54 new job openings related to virtual reality , suggesting that the launch of the product might be sooner than expected. The aggressive hiring could add 14 percent to the company's staff in the next quarter.

The demand for virtual reality product still lies in a relatively small niche audience but the social network giant is planning to lead the market.

Design Upgrade

Facebook also recently acquired much of the design team from Teehan + Lax, a design firm known for minimalistic design.

One of the most common related complaints is that Facebook layout is too crowded, and the new hiring could address this by giving it a facelift. It has been long time since Facebook upgraded its look, which only adds to this speculation.

Facebook currently has little more than 8,000 employees, compared to Google which has 55,000, but employees at Facebook have proportionally greater impact on the organization.

Other Plans

Facebook also plans to make good on Mark Zuckerberg's promise on bringing the entire world online by investing in satellites and drone tech, which hints that the company will not only hire programmers or designers but also people related to avionics, radio frequency communications, and thermal engineering.
