IVF Quadruplet-Delivery Kills New Mom
After being childless for 36 years, Erica Morales passed away after she got quadruplets. She died just hours after delivery at Phoenix hospital, said a close friend on Saturday.
For two years, she and her husband Carlos had been trying to get a baby. Unfortunately, she had never even touched or seen her quadruplets, before she died early Friday morning after a C-section surgery at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, said Nicole Todman.
On Sunday, her family in Whitehaven were on a candlelight vigil for her memory. "I love you E. I miss you. You will never be forgotten," said LaTonya Rogers, Erica Morales' cousin and best friend. It was a tearful farewell.
Just seven months after she became pregnant, Morales had delivered three girls and one boy on Thursday, said Todman, according to yahoo.com.
"They were transporting her from the surgery to whatever room, and she was still unconscious at that point. So, no, she never got to see them," Todman said. As she was among the few visitors to check out on the premature newborns, Todman said that they were fine. Todman was Morales' best friend ever since she was a child.
"They're beautiful," Todman reported about the babies. "They have tubes in their mouths and their noses. They've got little monitors and wires all over their body."
For two months the babies will remain in hospital, as the doctors give them medication to help them gain weight and become five pounds each. Currently, their weights are low, "between just above two pounds to just above three pounds", she said.
At first, Morales was hospitalized due to high blood pressure with complications before she was taken into surgery, Todman said.
Toni Eberhardt, the spokesman of the hospital, gave no explanations, even though the hospital released the statement: "Our heartfelt thoughts and condolences are with the family during this very difficult time."
Morales was a real estate agent, while her husband, Carlos, was employed in manufacturing. In order to get a baby, they tried everything right from acupuncture to fertility treatments. Last June, Morales had already suffered a miscarriage before she became pregnant.
Feeling put off for having miscarried once earlier, Morales just concentrated on following the procedures and eating enough, according to cbsnews.com.
"Her focus of her pregnancy was to make sure she did everything to make sure they were healthy so she was able to bring them into this world -- and she did," Todman said.
On Friday, Todman had put up a GoFundMe website for Carlos Morales as well as the babies. The site got over $30,000 as funds on Saturday evening. "I'm so grateful for the overwhelming support and the wonderful comments, and so are Carlos and Sandra, Erica's mother. They are so entirely grateful," Todman said.
