Teenage Bonnie and Clyde Run Wild in American South
Two young lovebirds are currently running wild in the American South, a modern reincarnation of the legendary Bonnie and Clyde.
The Associated Press reports that the couple are armed and have stolen vehicles as well as checks to fund their crime spree. They are believed to be carrying two guns and traveling in a stolen truck. They are thought to have traveled further south to South Carolina and Georgia.
The couple consists of 18-year-old Dalton Hayes and 13-year-old Cheyenne Phillips. Hayes' mother told the AP that Phillips told her and her son that she was actually 19 when they began dating three months. Hayes believed the girl because she always had cigarettes and often wrote checks, behavior typically reserved for people over the age of 18. They both hail from the town of Leitchfield, KY.
The local sheriff said that as time goes on and their crimes become more bold, the likelihood of a peaceful resolution to the situation is decreasing. Hayes' mother said she fears just such an outcome herself and has been crying herself to sleep every night since the ordeal began.
Hayes may have chosen to run away with Phillips because a grand jury was about to decide if he should face charges related to his arrest for burglary in 2014.
The couple is currently traveling in their third stolen truck after crashing their first and ditching the second. They were recently seen in a South Carolina Walmart where they used two stolen checks. Shortly after that they stole a truck from someone in Atlanta, which is where they acquired their firearms. The truck owner reported his car and weapons stolen after waking up to find his driveway empty.
