Chicago Bears Update: John Fox set to be the Next Coach
It did not take long for John Fox to find another team. Fox, who mutually parted ways with the Denver Broncos after their postseason lost against the Indianapolis Colts, is reportedly headed to the Chicago Bears. ESPN.com cited sources with knowledge of the team stating that a deal is "all but done." The first interview took place on Wednesday.
After finishing the season 5-11, the Bears fired Marc Trestman and general manager Phil Emery. Since then, the Bears have hired a first-year manager, Ryan Pace and have expressed interest in hiring a veteran coach. With Fox, who will become the Bears' third head coach since 2012, the Bears hope to make a run for the playoffs next season. They have missed the postseason for four straight years.
Fox was the head coach for the Broncos from 2011 to 2014. He led the team to 49 total wins and four consecutive AFC West titles. Under Fox, the Broncos made it to Super Bowl XLVIII where they ultimately lost 43-8 to the Seattle Seahawks. The Broncos have not named a head coach yet.
Prior to landing the job with the Broncos, Fox was with the Carolina Panthers for nine seasons with an overall 78-74 record. In those years, the team qualified for the postseason three times. They made it to Super Bowl XXXVIII where they lost 32-29 to the New England Patriots. Fox has also been a defensive coordinator with the Los Angeles Raiders back in the day and the New York Giants.
The Bears had reportedly also interviewed Doug Marrone, former head coach of the Buffalo Bills, Teryl Austin from Detroit, Adam Gase from Denver and Dan Quinn from Seattle.
Fox will have to get quarterback Jay Cutler, who was benched at one point this past season, back on track.
