Armenians Attack Russian Military Base Demanding Soldier Who Killed 6 (VIDEO)
Thousands of Armenians have taken to the street in protest after learning that a soldier accused of murdering a family of six, including a two-year-old, will not be extradited to Armenia and instead will face justice in Russia.
Asbarez.com reports that in addition to the six deaths, a six-month-old infant is in the hospital clinging to life after being stabbed a number of times. The baby is the only member of the family to have survived the heinous attack.
The killings took place on the evening of Jan. 12 when Valery Permyakov walked away from his post on a Russian military base and into the Armenian city of Gyumri armed with an automatic rifle and ammunition, according to The Guardian.
Permyakov was able to elude the police until he tried to cross the border into Turkey and was detained by immigration officials. He has since confessed to the killings, according to Asbarez.com. He was then handed over to the Russian military and is currently sitting in the brig at the Russian base.
After the Armenian prosecutor's office said that the Russian and not Armenian justice system would be processing the case, thousands of people began to protest at the military base in Gyumri and the Russian embassy in the Armenian capital of Yerevan, according to The Guardian.
At least 12 people, including three police officers, were wounded when demonstrators violently clashed with police, according to RT.
The Guardian reports that Permyakov had only been on the base in Gyumri for two months and intimated that he may have suffered from sort of mental problem.
RT reports the Russian ambassador released a statement offering his condolences. He also promised a joint investigation of the matter.
The Guardian says that the Russian military has established a special investigative body for this case and it will be headed by a high-ranking general.
