Trump Signs Executive Order To Stop Funding For Santuary Cities; Orders Start Of Mexico Border Wall
US President Donald J. Trump is slowly fulfilling one of his campaign promises - to build the wall and blocking federal funding to sanctuary cities. He has signed a series of executive actions that will start the wheels turning for the building of the border wall in Mexico.
During his speech at the Department of Homeland Security, Trump has said that "beginning today the United States of America gets back control of its borders." He has said that this will save the lives of people from both sides of the border.
Trump is expected to meet Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto next week and it is expected that they will be talking about how both countries will pay for the proposed border. In the past, Trump has said that Mexico is going to pay for the border "in one way or the other." It is expected that the U.S. will pay for it initially but there is no clear guidelines yet on how Mexico is going to pay for their share, if at all.
As Trump talks about securing the border, he is also taking aim at the "sanctuary cities." He has signed an executive order to cut off federal funding for cities who will not arrest immigrants who are in U.S. soil illegally. New York and other cities will continue to provide for illegal immigrants will be affected by this executive order.
About 300 communities will be affected by the executive order. New York City Mayor, Bill de Blasio, has said that he will continue to offer basic protection to illegal immigrants. The Mayor has said that they are "doing the right thing" and will not deviate from that. There's no clear guidelines yet on how the cutting off of federal funding will go but it is expected that this directive will not be taken sitting down.
