UFC Rumors: Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones Lasted Only One Day in Rehab
Jon Jones, the UFC light heavyweight champion, lasted only one day in rehab, sources reported.
Jones, who won the title when he defeated Daniel Cormier at UFC 182, had tested positive for the main metabolite of cocaine, bencoylecgonine prior to the fight in Las Vegas. At the time of the drug test, Jones, 27, was considered out-of-competition and was not disqualified from the fight. Although Jones was not punished, he voluntarily checked himself into a rehabilitation center.
According to his mother, Camille Jones, the fighter left the treatment facility after one day. However, she added that Jones is actively educating himself about the issue.
"I'm glad that this happened to Jon, this stopped him in his tracks, this let him know that he may need to change some friends, you know, because everyone is not for you for the best," Camille said. "So this is a good thing as far as our family is concerned, so we wasn't upset. Me and my husband considered it a blessing from God that our child was able to be helped and know that he need to stop and know that he needed the assistance to stop before it came to something worse."
She added, according to WBNG-TV in Binghamton, N.Y, "When he tested positive, my first question was, do you have a problem, a serious problem? And then he told me what happened. Jon is usually very honest with me, so he told me what happened. I was like, good for you.... good. You needed to be caught, it was just timing."
Jones will be making a trip to Boston this weekend to watch his brothers in the AFC championship game between the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts. Jones' brothers, defensive ends Arthur and Chandler will go against each other for a chance to make it to the Super Bowl.
