Platinum Wireless Headset Coming In January

Sony has just launched its Platinum Wireless Headset for PS4, Playstation VR, and other mobile users. One of its features is its noise cancelling mic and supports the 7.1 virtual surround sound just like the Gold model. In addition, it's also equipped with the advanced 3D audio technology that is used on PlayStation VR. This means that users will be able to get the exact surround-sound effects from their usual PlayStation 4 console.

Other games players can look forward to that will support the 3D audio tech will be Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, MLB The Show 17, and Days Gone. More games are expected to be announced in the future. The rationale behind the technology is similar with Dolby and other systems, in which it simulates the effects of audio that's getting at your ears coming from various directions and distances in order to mimic the behavior of sound that can be heard in real life. This, according to the PlayStation Blog.

The Catch

The wireless part can only be used on the PS4 thru a wireless adapter. But for the PlayStation VR and mobile, users will have to utilize the 3.5mm audio cable. But Sony has mentioned in the past that the 3D audio only works with the wired headphones for VR. They confirmed it won't work in wireless mode on PS4 as well. SO users can go wireless for regular PS4 games, but for those who want 3D audio, they'll have to plug in. Which defeats the whole point of the system.

Those titles that do not support the 3D audio, Sony said the headset contains an enhanced version of the 7.1 virtual surround sound. Thus, games without 3D audio using the Platinum Wireless Headset will still have good virtual surround sound per engadget.com.
