Nintendo's most-anticipated iPhone and iPad game "Super Mario Run" is now available for download today. The app is the Japanese gaming giant's first smartphone game based on its iconic video gaming character. Today's release is a global event, with notifications to be sent to those who signed up.

"Super Mario Run" was announced in the launch of the iPhone 7 earlier this year. Based on the beloved Italian plumber, the mobile game will surely entice the interest of today's adults due to the nostalgia factor carried by the game.

Today's release of the "Super Mario Run" is a high stake moment for Nintendo. Investors see the mobile game as bit risky for the Japanese company. According to a SensorTower research, the mobile game will earn less than "Pokemon Go" which made more than $150 million during its first month.

"Pokemon Go" was developed by Niantic, which Nintendo has a stake in. The augmented reality mobile game went viral and became this year's most popular title for Android and iOS users. "Super Mario Run" is facing a steep challenge to repeat the success of the Pokemon monsters.

This year, Nintendo cashed and is still making money on another nostalgia product - the NES Classic Edition retro gaming console. The unexpected success of the gaming console surprised the company. Since its release in November 2016, the NES Classic remains one of the most sought after toys for Christmas that include the Hatchimals.

To download "Super Mario Run" on iOS device, go to the App Store and search for the mobile game. Then press "Get" and enter the password or use TouchID to start the process.

"Super Mario Run" is actually free to try. The mobile game's $9.99 price is a one-off fee to access the full game. Around 370MB of storage space is needed to install the app on the device.
