Former Miami Dolphin Swims 9 miles to Land after Falling off Boat
Robert Konrad still has a little bit of 'Dolphin' in him.
The former Miami fullback reportedly fell off his boat during a solo fishing trip off the Florida coast on Wednesday. Since his boat was on autopilot, it drifted away once Konrad fell, forcing him to swim his way back to shore. The WPBF-TV story stated that Konrad fell while attempting to catch a fish.
Konrad, 38, reportedly swam nine miles, which had to be a 10 to 12-hour trip, before reaching Palm Beach. One source claimed that the former NFL player was only wearing his underwear.
The Coast Guard and Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office had started to search for him after his friends alerted them. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office found Konrad at 4:40 a.m. Thursday.
"He was lucky he was able to swim 9 miles throughout the night in the dark in the frigid waters," Mark Barney, a public affairs specialist for the U.S. Coast Guard, said according to Syracuse.com. "He was pretty exhausted."
ABC News reported that Konrad was treated for hypothermia and has since been released from the hospital. CNYCentral.com reported that Konrad had no desire to talk about the incident.
Konrad was a second-round pick in the 1999 NFL Draft. He played for the Dolphins from 1999 to 2004 and retired in 2005. During his run in the majors with the Dolphins, Konrad caught a total of 11 passes for 854 years with six touchdowns. He also rushed for 114 yards with one touchdown.
Konrad was the last Dolphin to wear the number 44, which was made popular by players that included Jim Brown and Ernie Davis.
He is originally from New York and attended Syracuse University.
He currently works in an investment firm.
