The third season of Fox's comedy went to have a more serious tone this time. Each member of the group in The Last Man on Earth started to cope with the end of the world in various ways.
To make the fans on the edge of their seat, the midseason finale ends with a thrilling cliffhanger. One member of the group was left facing an uncertain and scary fate. It is a sign that the Last Man on Earth might have a destructive and melancholic direction to reality.
The third season began with intruders rushing into their peaceful beachside home, and after Melissa (January Jones) fatally shot one of them, she has to cope with her conscience. She shot a character played by Jon Hamm.
The midseason finale had Melissa reunited with the group after leaving a goodbye note, travelling off and showing up again with little to no memory of being away and with mental instability that further made the group worried.
The end of the world made other members of the group affected in odd ways ,as well, this midseason. Erica (Cleopatra Coleman) and Carol (Kristen Schaal) are having a baby, and Carol is starting her family with enjoyment.
Carol decided that she needed a grandmother for her child. She begged Gail (Mary Steenburgen) to adopt her to make that happen. Gail resisted, and in a few short sentences viewers found out a lot about the mother figure of the group. When she did not resist to cry and finally told Carol that she wasn't ready to be a mother again as she lost her son.
