"Wonder Woman" Says No To United Nations As Ambassador!
In October 21st of 2016, the world saw the first appointed United Nations honorary ambassador superhero. Wonder Woman from DC comics was appointed a UN honorary ambassador for the empowerment of women and girls.
The appointment was novel, but received criticisms and protests on the appointment. Protesters demonstrated their disagreement on the decision of the appointment during the day of official appointment of Wonder Woman by entering the chamber where the appointment was held with their backs turned and fists raised. Moreover, petitions have been going on since the appointment of the superhero for the role.
Much of the criticism focused on why a real person couldn't be appointed instead of a comic book superhero. Furthermore, Wonder Woman received criticisms on how the character is portrayed in comic books and in her character design as having exaggerated proportions and revealing outfits, on top of the colour combination of red, blue and white in the character's color scheme.
According to a report in CBC news, the online petition against the appointment reached 45,000 signatories. The petition urged UN Secretary Ban Ki-Moon to reconsider the appointment of the character. The UN now officially announced that Wonder Woman's stint ends Friday of this week.Wonder Woman was intended to appeal to a younger audience to drive the message of the importance of women empowerment and gender equality. The UN did not provide reasons why the UN honorary ambassador will end her stint this weekend.
The United Nations have used pop culture characters to promote advocacies in the past. The most notable was the use of characters from the hit mobile game "Angry Birds" to promote climate change advocacies of the UN, but the use of those characters did not see much time either.
