Lebanese-American porn star Mia Khalifa has started receiving death threats after climbing up the charts of the website, PornHub. She is the website's most searched for adult performer and that spotlight has made her the subject of controversy.

The 21-year-old was born in Lebanon, a small country in Western Asia that is bordered by Syria and Israel before moving to Miami, FL. Ever since Khalifa has gotten more attention, the online threats and criticisms have started pouring in.

According to CNN.com, "some Arab news outlets published a family statement this week condemning Khalifa's actions and expression the family's regret about her fame as a porn star. She is also criticized for her tattoo, in Arabic, of the opening lines of the Lebanese National Anthem."

Aside from this statement, other people on the web have made death threats. One user stated that her head should be cut off. Another stated that Khalifa is headed for hell.

Although many people disapprove Khalifa for choosing to become a porn star, other critics are worried about the effect Khalifa could have on other Lebanese women.

Juliana Yazbeck, expressed her concerns for NOW Lebanon, writing, "It never even crossed my mind to think, 'she doesn't have the right.' What did cross my mind was: 'Really? Of the very few Lebanese women who are making global headlines, it had to be a porn star?'"

On the other end of the controversy, many believe that Khalifa's decision to be in adult films should not be scrutinized.

British-Lebanese author and publisher Nasri Atallah wrote:

"The moral indignation about Mia Khalifa, presumably the first Lebanese pornstar, is wrong for two reasons. First and foremost, as a woman, she is free to do as she pleases with her body.

Secondly, as a sentient human being with agency, who lives halfway across the world she is in charge of her own life and owes absolutely nothing to the country where she happened to be born. There is this odd perception that being Lebanese is a vocation and a duty first and that your personal life comes second."

He added that instead of being proud or ashamed of Khalifa, people should be indifferent.

One blogger, Gino Raidy wrote, "I think it's pretty great that at a time when the Lebanese government and authorities are following in the footsteps of our ultra-conservative Arab counterparts and banning porn sites in Lebanon, one of our own topped the charts of the biggest names in online porn.... I don't really care what any of you think about her career choice, after all, it's her body to do whatever she wants with."

Khalifa has handled the controversy over her popularity in porn easily so far. She recently tweeted: "Doesn't the Middle East have more important things to worry about besides me? How about finding a president? Or containing ISIS?"
