YouTube has officially released YouTube Rewind 2016 and like the ones before it, it's a treat to watch. Just a little under 7 minutes, this might be the longest tribute yet to come from the video sharing giant. Just what is this video really all about?

Started back in 2010, it was not yet called YouTube Rewind but mainly a list of the Top 10 videos of 2010. It would take that name by the next year but YouTube made sure to follow the same format. The main star for 2011 was Rebecca Black as the host, and known to many for her infamous Friday video.

Production was better for 2012 with the main feature Psy's viral hit "Gangnam Style." That video marked a milestone for both YouTube and the Korean star as it was the first video to breach 2 billion views and by accounts may have earned him $2 million in ads. Not only was the song featured but the YouTube Rewind for that year also showcased the dance moves.

By 2013, YouTube introduced the now iconic rewind button and would start including memes and other trending events in addition to music and viral videos. The YouTube Rewind 2014 for instance showcased the "Ice Bucket Challenge." That same video also started to include more original content creators dubbed as the YouTubers.

The YouTube Rewind 2015 was special for two important things. First, it marked the 10th anniversary of YouTube as a video hosting and sharing site. The second was that it was the first video to include a hashtag which was #YouTubeRewind. As expected, the company pulled out all the stops and not only featured various YouTubers but shot scenes in different locations.

For this year, YouTube Rewind may hold some surprises for the casual YouTube viewer. Many will likely wonder why Dwayne Johnson, also known as The Rock, for example is part of the video. The reason is simple and obvious as the Rock has his own channel he started this year.

On this year's YouTube Rewind, trending events included the recent Pokemon Go and even the Mannequin Challenge. The Bottle Flip makes an appearance and there is even the Running Man Challenge and that Pen Pineapple Apple Pen song. You can watch the YouTube video below and see and how many you can spot but if you don't want that, the site has released a nifty guide.
