Ron Rivera Strictly Following Dress Code Defined Panthers' 40-7 Loss; Cam Newton Explains Being Benched Over A Tie
Sunday night's game between the Seattle Seahawks and the Carolina Panthers resulted in a 40-7 loss for the Carolina Panthers. Apparently, one of the team's players, Cam Newton was benched because of a dress-code violation, to which coach Ron Rivera abides by.
The Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera refused to share any details about Cam Newton being benched on the matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. However, Newton himself told ESPN that he was benched because he did not wear a tie when they flew to Seattle. Despite Rivera's decision to not let Newton start on Sunday night, Rivera says that he completely agrees with his coach's decision. According to The Charlotte Observer, Newton said: "No person is greater than the next person and it is what it is." Implying that there are rules to be followed and no exceptions can be made.
The display of sportsmanship and adherence to the rules is a good display of value by Ron Rivera and the Carolina Panthers, however, the game on Sunday night did not go so well. People are stuck wondering how Newton ended up without a tie during the team's flight to Seattle which later caused the athlete to be benched.
According to Yahoo! Sports, the Carolina Panthers were against the Oakland Raiders last week and were staying in California, hence Newton did not have all his clothes packed with him. Newton says that he has a lot of ties, however, the problem lies with the shirt he was wearing. Apparently, the athlete came dressed in a black shirt and an overcoat to the post-game press conference.
Unfortunately, Newton did not have a spare button up shirt with a collar to wear a tie with, neither did his fellow Carolina Panthers. It seems that at the moment, everyone had already shipped off their spare clothing and it wouldn't be possible to borrow from a fellow player. As a result, Ron Rivera, who is from a military family strictly stuck by the rules and benched Newton.
According to USA Today, Ron Rivera claims that benching Cam Newton was completely his decision, and he would do the same if it ha been any other player on the team. For those who are wondering if the Carolina Panthers wouldn't have lost if Rivera hadn't benched Newton, the athlete shared his thoughts on the matter. "We didn't lose this game because of a tie" Newton started. "There were a lot of execution errors."
Despite the issue being extremely unique, whereas an MVP was benched over a dress-code violation, the Carolina Panthers' coach Ron Rivera maintained his fair stance, whether or not it will define the game. Stay tuned to News Every Day for more NFL 2016 updates.
