WhatsApp is now owned by Facebook, having over a million users every month. Latest media reports suggest that this popular messaging app will stop working on older Smartphones. Hence the users are advised to upgrade their phone.

WhatsApp was launched in 2009 and the mobile phone usage was different at that time. App stores of companies like Apple were few months old. In fact majority of the Smartphones sold at that time had operating systems that were offered by Nokia and BlackBerry.

Now the company wants to focus its efforts on the mobile platforms with a vast majority of use. The devices which won't support WhatsApp are important for the company but these Smartphones are unable to meet the capabilities required for the expansion of the app.

Operating Systems That Won't Support WhatsApp

The company has decided to stop several older services in 2017. In fact, the older devices do not offer the kind of capabilities required to expand the app's features. The mobile platforms which won't be able to support the messaging app include Windows phone 7, iOS 6, Android 2.1 and Android 2.2, Business Standard reports. All iPhone 4, 4s or 5 will not support the app if these are not updated to the newest version of operating system.

According to 91mobiles, the go-to the messaging app may stop soon in case the phone is not upgraded. The only solution in front of the users is to upgrade their Smartphone to the newest version of the operating System.

Some Relief For BlackBerry And Nokia Users

Representatives from WhatsApp revealed that the company is extending its support for Nokia S40, Nokia Symbian S60 BlackBerry OS, and BlakBerry 10. This would happen until June 30, 2017.

It was announced earlier this year that WhatsApp is likely to pull support for the older phones and the deadline for the upgrade might approach soon.
