Belgian Rapist And Serial Killer Wins Right For Mercy Killing
Finally, the man who is a serial murderer and rapist will get the humane death that he craves on January 11, as the Belgian government agrees that he could receive euthanasia.
Fifty-year-old Frank Van Den Bleeken has been behind bars for 30 years. He will soon be euthanized in Belgium on the 11th. He requested that he wanted to die due to his "unbearable" psychological suffering, according to rt.com.
Frank was charged of repeated rape and murder. It was reported that the "euthanasia will indeed be implemented" in Bruges, a northwestern town, a justice ministry spokeswoman told a local newspaper. "Now the time has come," she said.
Although the court had acceded to his request in September, the date for the process was not settled at that time. Hence, he has turned down a suggestion to be considered for "early parole", as he thought of himself as a threat to society. However, he was unable to bear the pain behind bars, AFP reported.
Even though he has been behind bars for 30 years, he is still not able to control his "violent sexual urges" that made him rape and kill a pretty teenager, and assault an 11-year-old girl, according to mirror.co.uk.
"If people commit a sexual crime, help them deal with it. Just locking them up helps no one: not the person, not society and not the victims. I am a human being, and regardless of what I've done, I remain a human being. So yes, give me euthanasia," he had pleaded.
On the other hand, Annie and Liliane, sisters of the victim, Christiane Remacle, were shattered by the decision. Their mother, Mary, had died due to a broken heart, as she could never recover after her teenaged daugher was killed. "We know our mother never got over the death of her youngest daughter. But at the time of her death two years ago, we saw how she was consumed by grief.
"She asked if she could be buried next to Christiane. We made sure we gave Mummy her last wish... they are now side by side."
Belgium had legalized euthanasia in 2002, but in 2013, the number of mercy killings carried out in the country stood at 1,807, according to AFP.
However, the rules for euthanasia are not lenient. Anyone who is asking to "die" needs to be mentally capable of it. He or she should also be conscious. The demand to die should be a "voluntary, considered and repeated" one.
Last February, Belgium was also the first country in the world that permitted euthanasia for children who were terminally ill even as the lower house of Parliament permitted it. There were a number of protestors against the ruling, but finally, the rule came into action.
