'E.T.' And 'Back To The Future' Getting A Reboot? How Will The Sequels Live Up To The Original Versions?
During a BluRay and DVD promo release of "Jason Bourne" recently, the executive producer spoke about the possibility of "E.T." and "Back To The Future" reboot. The "Back To The Future" recently celebrated its 30th anniversary with Universal Pictures which brought the film back to the big screen for a period of time.
According to MovieWeb, Robert Zemeckis, the director of "Back To The Future" revealed that a reboot is impossible without the permission of writer and director Bob Gale. Their contract with Amblin Entertainment and Universal Pictures gave them the authority to allow or reject possibilities of a reboot until they are dead.
Speaking with Yahoo! Movies about the possibility of "E.T." and "Back To The Future" reboot, Frank Marshall assured fans that there will be no remake of the films, adding that they are "never touching" those. But, he adds that he does love watching those movies. According to The Guardian, those futuristic films are not the only movies not to get a delayed reboot, including "Tron," "Dune," "Zoolander," "Trainspotting," and "Bad Santa" as well.
But make no mistake, the "Back To The Future" franchise is still popular. In fact, in the 30th-anniversary celebration of the movie, there are about 21 million people who reminisced about the film on Facebook. When the film hit the theaters last year, the movie made $4.8 million worldwide. Moreover, the special message of Christopher Lloyd on YouTube about the anniversary celebration racked up 1.7 million views.
Meanwhile, Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis remain adamant that there will be no reboot of "Back To The Future" and "E.T." In 2014, Bob Gale said that the reason why neither are getting reboots is because he hasn't found movie sequels that are any good that can actually "live up" to the original movie. He doesn't believe that sequels will be able to surpass the originals.
