The New York Yankees have decided to give up their top prospect, left-handed pitcher Manny Banuelos for two pitchers, David Carpenter and Chasen Shreve, Jack Curry of the YES Network reported. Banuelos will be headed to the Atlanta Braves.

The 23-year-old prospect signed with the Yankees in 2008 and was expected to become a huge part of the Yankees' pitching future. However, the young star, known as one of the "Killer B's," missed the 2013 season after having Tommy John surgery on his left elbow in October 2012.

Since then, his numbers have dwindled. During this past season in between Single-A, Double-A Trenton and Triple-1 Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Banuelos went 2-3 and posted a 4.11 ERA with a strikeout to walk ratio (K/BB) of 71 to 22 in 25 starts.

In this deal, the Yankees acquired two relievers. Carpenter, 29, compiled a 2.63 ERA with the Braves over the past two seasons. The right-hander has a strikeout to walk ratio of 141 to 36 over 126 2/3 innings. In 2014, Carpenter went 6-4 with three saves in 65 outings.

Shreve, 24, debut last July. He finished the year with a 0.72 ERA and a 15 to 3 strikeout to walk ratio in 12 1/3 innings. While playing in the minors, mostly for Double-A Mississippi, he posted a 2.67 ERA and an 87/12 K/BB ratio in 64 innings.

"It's going to be a whole new look for the Yankees,'' said one scout Thursday night reported by the New York Post. "Banuelos always had a good feel for pitching but it seems like he never really bounced back from the surgery. I think he just needs to build up his arm strength.''

Banuelos will join former Yankees scout Gordon Blakeley in Atlanta.
