Will “Moana” Beats Frozen's $93.6M Thanksgiving 5-Day Record?
Moana definitely melted Frozen's record. Disney enthusiastically announced that Moana's $15.68M opening day did definitely beat Frozen at $15.1M. What's more, the island princess movie is said to hit $90M in the next five days. The movie is currently being played at 3,875 theaters. Statistics suggest that 64% who watched the movies are moms and 53% are under 25.
To note, Frozen holds the top spot for a 5-day Thanksgiving opening with $93.6M. In three days, Moana is expected to reach $62M. The next coming days will definitely give the answer of whether or not Moana can surpass Frozen. Note that the turning point is during Black Friday, being the highest grossing day. During the next couple of days, however, the records may fluctuate. The top 10 films can fall by as much as 10% before it can shoot up by as much as $122% on Black Friday.
At this point, family fares are ranking high in the box office. Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them by Warner Bros. was able to bag as much as $11 the other day. On the other hand, movies with adult titles tend to slow down; for example, the Allied film from Paramount is obviously being beaten real hard by the alien drama film Arrival.
Disney is doing really good this 2016 since many of its films were able to top the box office. Some of the blockbusters they did were Zootopia, The Jungle Book, and of course, Finding Dory. Next month, Disney is set to launch Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is expected to debut as much as $130 once it hits movie theaters.
Disney never announced the budget for Moana but most animated films cost around $150 million to $200 million. But given that Moana is still to be launched on other theaters in some part of the world, the film will surely be able to surpass the cost.
