‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ Aims for $130M On Its First Weekend
The Force is expected to be with Lucasfilm and Disney as stand- alone film "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" is expected to open to more than $130 million in North America from December 16-18. Early Tracking shows the biggest box office curiosity could even approach $150 million.
If the "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" meet the $130 million expectation, it is said to mark the second- biggest December opening of all time. Last year's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" marks the number one spot.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, no December film that was launched exceeded $85 million including "Avatar."
The entertainment news site also reported that "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" is just a first in a series of planned stand- alone movies from Lucasfilm. The movie is directed by Gareth Edwards and will star Felicity Jones.
On the other hand, Disney is expected to help Lucasfilm manage expectations and prevent comparison between "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" since "Rogue One" is a stand- alone movie.
Last year, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" earned a record- setting $248 million domestically and $2.07 billion worldwide, which falls third place after box- office movies "Avatar" and "Titanic."
Meanwhile, Entertainment Weekly posed questions if a new trilogy will begin after the movie's trilogy ends in 2019, or if Lucasfilm will just focus on creating stand- alone movies like the "Rogue One."
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said that they are still thinking about it and they do not know if there will be another trilogy or stand- alone movie.
The entertainment news site has expressed that how the audiences would react to "Rogue One" will be one of the factors if Lucasfilm should decide for another stand- alone film.
In addition, Lucasfilm has expressed being thrilled about creating stand- alone films since each would not have to lean against events from the previous ones.
