South Korean Activist Threatens to Airdrop Interview DVDs over North Korea
In a move that is bound to escalate tension, a South Korean activist has vowed to airdrop DVDs of the movie 'Interview' over North Korea.
The film starring Seth Rogen and James Franco has caused heartburn to North Korea which has been vocal about its displeasure as it features an assassination of its leader Kim Jong Un. It has also applauded the hack on Sony Pictures, which made the Interview, in November following which personal information of employees and unreleased movies found their way online.
According to The Hindu, South Korean activist Park Sang-hak said he would drop 100,000 DVDs and thumb drives from a balloon over North Korea beginning January and will continue till March when winds are more favorable. He said he would drop the DVDs discreetly, evading capture.
Park said North Korean leadership would breakdown if idolization of the leader Kim Jung Un ends, The Washington Post reported.
To do just that, Park is working with US non-profit Human Rights Foundation that is also trying to raise $ 250,000 for its 'Hack Them Back' campaign, to help break the information censorship that North Korea imposes on its citizens.
The hack on Sony Pictures was perpetuated by a group named Guardians of Peace, and was aimed at pressurizing Sony against releasing the Interview. After US President Barack Obama expressed support to Sony, the latter released the movie online and at select theatres. Following Obama's expression of support, North Korea's internet networks crashed last week. The country blamed US for the blackout.
