'Suicide Squad': Extended Edition, Get to Know Harley Quinn, Can This Salvage the Terrible Movie?
Suicide Squad is reportedly one of the worst movies of the year, rating only 26% on Rotten Tomatoes and 40% on Metacritic. The lack of story and character arc was one of the major problems of the movie.
Recently, an extended version of the film was released. This wouldn't come as a shock to most, as "extended" or "uncut" versions of theatrical hits (or in this case, a miss) are always released in the DVD version.
The extended cut of the movie, now available on Digital HD, does not really do much in able to salvage the movie. In cases like these, the extended version of the film usually brings about some improvement or at least clarifications for the fans.
The 133-minute version of Suicide Squad still does not impressed fans and critics alike. It does not offer something of high quality. Most were expecting to see a complete narrative via character, or at least some story behind all the action. Fans were hoping that with these additional 11 minutes of the movie, comes a difference.
Once again, fans were let down. Suicide Squad: Extended Edition is honestly just the same movie. Fans who were expecting to see more of interaction between Joker (Jared Leto) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) - since they took up most of the teaser trailer - will be disappointed. All that was added to the King and Queen of Arkham City were one brief flashback and, well, that's it.
There was also a brief second-act sequence involving Quinn psychologically interrogating and taunting her teammates which shows off that she really was an educated medical professional. Additionally, there were scenes for Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) and Deadshot's (Will Smith) relationship.
One thing fans did appreciate was the additional scene of the rest of the Squad drinking together. Despite the mixed reviews Suicide Squad has gotten, there is still no denying the love and success the anti-heroine, Harley Quinn has gotten.
This crowd reaction was enough to greenlight a spin-off based on the character. The Harley Quinn spin-off movie has now found a screenwriter to work on the film. Margot Robbie herself is also going to produce the said spin-off. She already signed a contract with Warner Bros. that would tie-in any movie that is produced by her and her own production company, LuckyChap Entertainment.
The spin-off will not just star Harley Quinn, it will also feature more female characters from the DC Comics Universe such as Cat Woman, Poison Ivy, and the Birds of Prey including Black Canary, Huntress, and Batgirl.
