The Walking Dead: Did Negan Cut Daryl's Tongue Off? [Hints/Clues Fans Migth've Missed]

After a grueling 80-minute episode from last Sunday’s The Walking Dead fans have come face to face with the fact that Negan is taking over. The show’s fourth episode of its seventh season was a tormenting one for the fans.

It seems like there is no light at the end of the tunnel for Rick’s (Andrew Lincoln) group of survivors under Negan’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) judgment. Both Rick and Daryl (Norman Reedus) have been completely under Negan, in fear of losing more of their family should they do something against the big bad.

The only characters who still cannot accept the fact that this is the way life has to be are Michonne (Danai Gurira), Carl (Chandler Riggs) and Rosita (Christian Serratos). The rest of the survivors in Alexandria seemed hesitant to follow Rick’s choice to give Negan control but accepted the situation anyway.

Fans are getting riled up about the fact that these strong group of people, who were once an indestructible force, are being pushed down by these “Saviors”. Rick has lost control, Daryl is completely broken, Maggie and Sasha have gone to the Hilltop, and with Abraham and Glenn dead, that leaves the group’s safety in jeopardy.

During the course of the episode titled, “Service”, Negan and Dwight seemed hell-bent on bullying the rest of the group. From humiliating Rick in front of everyone, to calling Olivia out with fat jokes, targeting Enid and her sentimental balloons, taunting Rosita and Spencer, to tormenting Daryl even more.

Several interesting theories about Daryl has immediately been posted on the internet. In one theory, fans have speculated that Daryl’s tongue was cut off.

When Negan arrived along with a silenced and broken Daryl Dixon, he and Dwight taunted Daryl by asking him questions that he did not answer. Now, this has caused some fans to think if Negan cut Daryl’s tongue out. After all, he was asked twice, and did not utter a single word. Rick asked Negan if Daryl could stay, in which Negan said no, unless Daryl could “talk” him into it.

As expected, Daryl did not say a word. Near the end of the episode, Dwight showed Daryl his motorcycle saying, “You could have it back, all you need to do is ask.” forcing Daryl to speak, which he did not do. Did Negan or Dwight cut Daryl’s tongue off? It wouldn’t be much of a surprise, after all, Negan was not impressed by his stubbornness.

Showrunners already know how fans would react if they kill Daryl off, especially after killing Glenn and Abraham just a few weeks prior. They wouldn’t dare erase one more survivor from the show, or would they? Maybe cutting Daryl’s tongue off is their way of saying that no one is safe, and no one is untouchable on the show.

After all, Norman Reedus himself have said in an interview that his character could definitely die on the show. So, did fans see a tongue-less Daryl last Sunday? Or was Daryl secretly sending Rick a message without speaking a word?

Some fans have also speculated that Daryl was sending Rick a message by means of Morse Code. At the beginning of the episode, fans can clearly see a huge “American Morse Code” poster in Rick’s home.

In a scene much later in the episode, fans see Daryl blinking in what seems like a sequence. Could this be a message? It is a far-fetched idea, but with this show, it is not impossible.

The question remains, what was the message he was trying to send to Rick? Did Rick get the message? Are these two trying to plan something outside everybody’s knowledge?

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
