Donald Trump Needs Our Support – Barack Obama Calls for Respect for New President-Elect
U.S. President Barack Obama has urged Americans to give President-elect Donald Trump a chance and allow the reality star-turned-politician to get adjusted to his incoming responsibilities as president of the U.S. This statement was relayed by Obama during a news conference before flying off for his last foreign trip to Greece, Germany, and Peru.
Obama advised Donald Trump that his expectations of the presidency will be soon shaken up by the demands associated with the job during a meeting last week at the White House. He mentioned Trump's sincerity about being president for all Americans. The New York Times quoted Obama encouraging Trump to send signals of unity to minority groups and women.
Mr. Obama believes that Donald Trump has a fewer set of ideas than another president-elect. "I don't think he is ideological," Mr. Obama said. "I think ultimately he is pragmatic."
During the campaign, Obama criticized Donald Trump's temperament and qualifications to be president. After Trump's victory, he noted that it is his priority to help the president-elect succeed for the good of the country. When asked about Trump's selection of white nationalist Stephen K. Bannon as his chief White House strategist and senior counselor, Obama did not offer any comments.
The Thursday meeting between Barack Obama and Donald Trump saw the former tutoring the latter on a wide range of domestic and foreign policy matters. During the 90-minute one-on-one meeting, Obama told Trump "I want to emphasize to you, Mr. President-elect, that we now are going to want to do everything we can to help you succeed because if you succeed, then the country succeeds,"
Obama commended Donald Trump for tapping into the enthusiasm of his voters. He considered this achievement as impressive. When questioned about his concerns toward Trump, Obama said "Absolutely, of course, I've got concerns. He and I differ on a whole bunch of issues."
