The first trailer for the film adaptation of the famed Japanese manga series "Ghost in the Shell" arrived early Sunday, offering fans of the anime classic a little preview of what it will look like on the big screens in 2017. Starring American actress Scarlett Johansson as The Major, the film explores the cyber policewoman's battles with cyber criminals and hackers who attempt to bring down the Hanka Robotics Corp.
Directed by British filmmaker Rupert Sanders, who megged "Snow White and the Huntsman," the trailer highlights the action sequences from the "Ghost in the Shell", whose other cast members include Juliette Binoche, "Game of Thrones" actor Pilou Asbaek, and Japanese superstar Takeshi Kitano. Also part of the movie is Michael Pitt and "The Wolverine" actress Rila Fukushima.
The casting of Scarlette Johansson made did not sit well with diehard fans of the "Ghost in the Shell." As reported by The Verge, the controversial casting of the "Loss in Translation" star exposes the many complications of and contradictions of Japanese animation. Paramount Pictures released a still of Johansson in costume as Major Mototo Kusanagi - an image portraying Hollywood's refusal to cast Asian actors.
Director Sanders defended the selection of Scarlette Johansson as the lead for the live-action adaptation of "Ghost in the Shell" following the controversy created by her casting. He cited the actress' incredible body of work including "Lost in Translation" and "Under the Skin" which are edgy films that made her fit for The Major role.
Sanders deflected the question regarding the casting of Scarlette Johansson in the "Ghost in the Shell" saying that "To me it was, you know, I stand by my decision - she's the best actress of her generation and I was flattered and honored that she would be in this film. So many people who were around the original anime have been vehemently in support of her because she's incredible and there are very few like her."
