Microsoft News & Update: Xbox One Crowned As The Best-Selling Gaming Console In October 2016, PlayStation 4 Struggles To Be On Top Again

The Xbox One continues its domination of the video game console market in the U.S. in October, based on market information from data-tracking firm The NPD Group. This development marks Xbox One's leadership for the fourth month in a row, outselling rival Sony's PlayStation 4. According to Microsoft, Xbox One also outsold the competition in the United Kingdom and Australia through the covered period.

Xbox One marketing head Mike Nichols issued a statement thanking the fans of the game console for their continued excitement and support. According to Nichols, "Xbox One has been the best-selling console in the U.S. for the past four months, and in the U.K. and Australia into each of the last two months."

Microsoft's four-month reign, sales-wise, is attributed to Xbox One S, which debuted in August 2016 and is a slimmer version of the Xbox One. Sony failed to put the PlayStation 4 back on top despite its move to cut the price of PS4 Slim to $300 in September.

But Sony might snatch the lead from Microsoft in November again due to the launch of the PlayStation 4 Pro console, which offers a 4K resolution for playing video games and video content. Microsoft's next update to the Xbox One won't happen until late 2017, with the launch of Xbox One Scorpio.

According to Tech Times, Microsoft credits the number and quality of games available to Xbox One for driving the uptick in sales. The tech giant specifically cites "Gears of War 4" and "Battlefield 1" for the increase in multiplayer users. Microsoft's release of the Xbox One bundles which include "Gears of War," "Battlefield," "Minecraft," and "FIFA" options is aimed at maintaining this advantage.

IGN reported that the NPD Group would release another report next week to provide more insights to the competition between Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
