Manny Pacquiao Update: 'Pacman' Unsure About Fighting After November 5?
Philippine Senator, and eight-division world champion, Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao is unsure about his boxing future after his November 5 fight against Jessie Vargas.
The 37-year-old boxer will be challenging Vargas' WBO world welterweight title at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. It would be his first official bout since announcing his retirement after his rubber match with long-time rival Timothy Bradley last April.
After Pacquiao won his last fight via unanimous decision, he announced that he was walking away from the sport after 20 years of active competition, citing that he would prefer putting his sole focus on public service. But just months after winning a Senate seat in his home country, Pacquiao seemingly had gotten the itch to step back inside the ring.
In a report by Philippine local outlet ABS-CBN News in late July, Pacquiao simply stated that boxing is "his passion and vocation." However, he also made a promise that he would not let go or forget any of his obligations as an elected public official.
"I would not want my obligations to be compromised, and for the meantime, I am also earning money for my family," Pacquiao said in his native language. "I do not want to make public service as a source of my livelihood."
With his boxing return now official, many of the people around him are wondering how his future would be after the November 5 fight. His promoter Bob Arum already has opponents in mind for him, like undefeated world champions Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman. Trainer Freddie Roach, on the other hand, is still open for a rematch against former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr.
But for his part, Pacquiao says he is not yet thinking about 2017. In a report by Boxingscene.com, the Filipino boxing icon stated that he would rather approach his career "one fight at a time" and that he should be asked about it again a day after he faces Vargas.
