iPhone 7 Updates, Review: Test Reveals iPhone 7 32GB Much Slower Than More Expensive Models?
Apple’s recent smartphone model, the iPhone 7 caused quite a stir in the mobile arena with the recent discovery - iPhones were not created equal. The 32GB iPhone 7 costs $649, the 128GB costs $100 more, and the most expensive model in the iPhone 7 tier costs an extra $200 than the entry-level. While the overall appearance, color options, and chips are identical, the difference lies in the storage - or so we thought.
Apple consumers think storage capacity is the only difference between the iPhone 7 models, but lately Unbox Therapy on YouTube debunked it. The tests show that the 32GB iPhone 7 is significantly lower than the more expensive models. In the video, two iPhone 7 models were compared: the 32GB and the 256GB.
Using a performance test app, CPU, memory, and storage of these models were examined. The tests show that the Storage Write speed of the 256GB iPhone 7 model is 359 MBytes/Sec and Storage Read speed is 851 MBytes/Sec. Meanwhile, over at the 32GB model, the Storage Write is 42 MBytes/Sec and Storage Read is 686 MBytes/Sec. “You’re talking almost 10 times faster Write Speeds on the larger capacity iPhone,” Hilsenteger said.
While this is a big issue to some, others might not mind. Besides, not all iPhone owners are heavy users. “It's not a deal breaker. I don't transfer GBs to my iPhone often,” Business Insider wrote, “and the bottleneck is usually the Internet connection speed, not the limits of memory write speeds.”
“That discrepancy might be due to Apple using a different type of flash memory inside the 32GB iPhones,” Tech Radar writes, “but it's also an established fact that smaller solid state drives run slower anyway, simply because they use fewer parallel channels at once.”
But then again, it is commonly known that the bigger the storage capacity, the better the performance. Even Apple, with its reputation to invent seamlessly performing devices, is vulnerable to that limitation. However, it is still worth knowing these discrepancies before considering which storage option to buy.
