Google has set up a new platform called Google Nomulus to bring domains such as .how, .soy etc. to the public. As everyone knows, initially the approved domains were fewer and they were .com, .edu, .net, .uk, .in etc. Two years back, Internet Corp for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) changed the rule and added other suffixes including .movie, .xyz etc. Many companies bought specific domains that might attract different sorts of businesses and planning to allow registration in their platform.

Google Nomulus is a registry platform based on Java and supports its top-level domains (TLDs) such as .google, .foo, .how etc. While it keeps .google, and .foo as its personal domains, it gives out its registry platform for everyone to register with the approved domains. Further, it holds all the data of registration under its TLDs. It also facilitates the transfer of existing domains to its TLDs. The home page of Nomulus have the link to registry.

The registry link on Nomulus leads users to "Google Registry", where a user can check the available domains and its registrar partners' websites. Users can contact the registrar partners and get registered with the particular domain chosen. It is reported that firms including Google see new exclusive domain names as an investment and trying to get more added to their lists, reports CNET.

"We understand that while providing access to our core registry functions and Registration Data Access Protocol (RDAP) we need to showcase the advanced features of Google Cloud platform," said Ben McIlwan of Google. "This is to raise interoperability and the open standards in the industry", cited by The Financial Express.

Google Nomulus is able to support TLD functionalities such as WHOIS, Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP), reporting, trade mark protection, DNS interface etc. It handles buy, transfer, check and renew domain names to maintain the TLD. The opening of own registry platform to everyone by Google in the wake of new Pixel phone and a Pop-up store in New York, shows that it is in the way diversification .along with innovation.
