Shailene Woodley was recently arrested during a protest against Dakota Access Pipeline. Her arrest has gained the public's attention giving her Facebook live video 4.7millions views to date. For some who don't know, what is it that Shailene Woodley is really protesting on?

The tension around the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline being built through North Dakota is on a constant rise. Hundreds of Native American tribes have joined forces with the Standing Rock Sioux tribe as they object the newly constructed pipeline’s pass through ancient burial grounds and sacred lands of the indigenous people of North Dakota.

The project itself is considered a resource efficient way of transporting crude oil through the area of four states, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Illinois, allowing a fast and safe transport of up to 570,000 barrels of crude oil to Midwest and East Coast markets.

Even though financially productive, the build of the pipeline is considered dangerous for nature, with long-term effects on the environment, Lake Oahe is considered highly threatened by the pipeline, which could result in contamination of the main water source for the local native tribes.

The government is using the full power of its repressive apparatus, as Shailene Woodley, one of the most avid voices of the protest has been arrested by the police under charges of trespassing on private property.

Teen Vogue shares information on her detainment and the future of the protests. Protests arose, after the Standing Rock Sioux tribe objected to the Dakota Access Pipeline several times in court by suing the federal agency that approved the pipeline. The court’s ruling was that the construction may continue on the lands which threaten the water source.

Since then, almost 3,000 natives and protestors have set camp on the highway since the construction of the pipeline has begun.

Even though construction has been approved, the U.S Army Corps will not continue construction according to a statement released. This has given the locals and protestors hope for real investigation in the coming days and belief in the ways of a peaceful protest.

RT shares Bernie Sanders’ appeal towards Obama to halt the construction of the controversial pipeline. He is the fifth governor to demand a reaction from the head of the U.S.
Sanders’s concerns come to the preservation of nature for the current and future generations.
“We will not survive if we continue to destroy nature," was the governor’s position on the situation revolving around the pipeline’s construction.

The official statement of the five governors says that suspension of the consturction permit is what they are pushing for until such time that "complete environmental and cultural review has been completed for the entire project."

This note was signed by Senator Sanders (D, Vermont), joined by four Democratic Senators Patrick Leahy (Vermont), Dianne Feinstein (California), Edward Markey (Massachusetts ) and Benjamin Cardin ( Maryland).
