Conjoined Twin Anias and Jadon McDonald Can Now Start Living Their Lives Separately After A Successful Marathon Surgery.
Anias and Jadon McDonald can now celebrate new beginnings. After a successful surgery, the twins who were joined at head, the twins are now recovering in intensive care units.
The type of surgery that was performed on the twins is known as craniopagus surgery. According to CNN, the leading specialist for this type of surgery is Dr. James Goodrich. His surgery on the McDonald's twin is only the 59th craniopagus separation surgery in the world.
Parents Nicole and Christian McDonalds decided to go for the operation despite the risks involved such as death and brain damage. Nicole happily posted on her Facebook page that the conjoined twins are now separated.
The surgery to separate the conjoined twins was performed at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx. Dr. Goodrich and his team started to work on the twins last Thursday morning and the surgery ended 27 hours later. It took sixteen hours to fully separate the skull and another four hours to rebuild their skulls individually.
USA Today reported that the McDonalds twins do share some brain tissues. Nicole said that her son Anias really "got rocked during the surgery." The twins are going to stay at the hospital for another week to be able to observe changes and progress in their recovery.
To cover for their medical expenses, Nicole set up a GoFundMe page for the twins. She expressed that deciding to have the operation for her babies are a big leap of faith. But now that it is done, they are taking each day as it comes, one step at a time. She added, "I'll be hanging out there until I see those smiles again."
The twins' father Christian said that he cannot believe the love and support that his family is getting. He added, "I didn't realize how many people out there have so much good in them and how much they want to help."
