It was announced last Tuesday that the James Cameron-produced live-action adaptation of the cult manga and anime series "Alita: Battle Angel" will be getting an IMAX release worldwide.
The said announcement was made by both IMAX Corporation and 20th Century Fox, who will be taking the distribution rights for the film.
"Spy Kids" and "Sin City" director Robert Rodriguez will be doing directorial duties, with Cameron and Jon Landau producing the project. Laeta Kalogridis was tapped to write the script for the film. Principal photography for "Alita" will be starting next month, as the team aims to release the film on the 20th of July, 2018.
In addition, "Deadpool's" Ed Skrein and "Watchmen" alumnus Jackie Earle Haley will be joining the cast alongside its main star Rosa Salazar and Christoph Waltz.
The synopsis for the film is as follows, according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter:
Set in the 26th century, Alita: Battle Angel tells of a female cyborg that is discovered in a trash yard by a scientist. With no memory of her previous life except her deadly martial arts training, the woman becomes a bounty hunter, tracking down criminals.
Based on the manga series of the same name, "Alita: Battle Angel" ran in Shueisha's adult-oriented Business Jump magazine during the 90s. It spawned two sequel series, a manga reboot, and an OVA series.
