Memphis and BYU Brawl at the end of Miami Beach Bowl
The inaugural Miami Beach Bowl between Memphis and Brigham Young was memorable on so many different levels. After playing football for 60 minutes and then battling for the victory in two overtimes, Memphis ended the game with a 54-yard field goal, beating BYU by 55-48.
The battle did not stop there, however. Right after the win, a brawl started as dozens of players ran toward the middle of the field, throwing punches. Cameras were able to capture BYU defensive back Kal Nacua, who already had blood running down his face, punch the Tigers' tight end Alan Cross as a staff member was restraining him.
"You want them to rise above that and have fantastic sportsmanship," Cougars coach Bronco Mendenhall said reported by ESPN. "I'm sure if you go back and look, there'll be an instance or two that ignited. Probably the majority wanted to handle it really well."
The BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe sent out an apology to fans via twitter.
"I don't know what happened at the end, first of all, so I don't know how upset I am," Tigers coach Justin Fuente said. "I'm sure I'll see it eventually. It's not who we are, it's not what we want to represent. I hope it doesn't take away from an incredible football game, for both sides."
"This is probably the craziest game, most emotional game I've ever been a part of," said Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch stated.
Lynch threw four touchdown passes and rushed for three more for 306 yards. He is the first player on the FBS level since 2012 to have at least four touchdown throws and three touchdown runs in one game.
Kelwone Malone, who caught two touchdown passes, stated, "We made history."
The last time the Tigers won a bowl game was in 2005.
