Michael Brown Shooting: Curfew in Ferguson, MO sees arrests, tear gas
Clashes defined the late night hours in Ferguson on the one-week anniversary of the shooting death of Michael Brown.
The police declared a curfew that took effect at 12 a.m. local time Aug. 17 and ended at 5 a.m., according to The New York Times. The Times says clashes between protesters and police broke out less than a half hour after the curfew began and had ended before 1 a.m. with the arrest of seven protesters. They protesters will be charged with "failure to disperse."
Saturday night Aug. 16 did not see any of the looting that took place the night of Aug. 15 when there was not a curfew in place, allowing looters to infiltrate the peaceful protesters.
The Times says the police deployed tear gas in response to reports that some of the protesters present after the curfew were armed. Capt. Ron Johnson said that one person had been shot and a police car fired upon. This led to the firing of tear gas by the police.
Despite the curfew, store owners took measures to protect themselves from looters.
