So Mary Poppins is returning, and Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda are starring in the new movie directed by Rob Marshall.
Disney on Monday announced that the sequel to the movie will be released on Dec. 25, 2018. This is a clear five decades after the 1964 classic film began to play in theaters. The title Mary Poppins Returns was also revealed for the first time.
It is a new musical with Emily Blunt as the magical nanny, and she will star opposite Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is the star and creator of the Broadway hit musical, Hamilton.
Mary Poppins Returns, to be directed by Rob Marshall, will feature an adapted script by David Magee, even as it is produced alongside Marc Platt and John DeLuca. The new score will be composed by Marc Shaiman, even as he and Scott Wittman work together to write the original songs.
P.L. Travers' 1934 book introduced the world to the classic character, which got adapted into the 1964 movie starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. Another seven books about Mary Poppins were published between 1935 and 1988.
"I am truly humbled and honored to be asked by Disney to bring P.L. Travers' further adventures to the screen," Marshall said. "The iconic original film means so much to me personally, and I look forward to creating an original movie musical that can bring Mary Poppins, and her message that childlike wonder can be found in even the most challenging of times, to a whole new generation."
The new movie is set in London that is facing the Depression. Jane and Michael Banks are grown up. Michael's three children are visited by their former nanny, Mary Poppins, after a terrible tragedy in the family.
