Rio Olympic Games News and Updates: Andy Murray Will Seek Zika Virus Advice
Andy Murray will seek medical guidance on the Zika virus before travelling to Rio for the Olympics, reports the BBC Radio.
World Health Organization (WHO) received a letter signed by more than 100 leading scientists' saying that it's 'unethical' to take the Olympic Games ahead. But it has made no changes in the Games' schedule.
However, there is no reason to delay or move the Games because of the mosquito-borne disease, said The International Olympic Committee (IOC). As WHO believes that there are many other ways of transmitting the virus.
The British tennis champion said his thought to seek medical guidance was the result of recent reports of scientists saying it was "unethical" for the summer Olympics and Paralympics to go ahead.
"I will speak to a couple of doctors about it and see what their advice is," he told BBC Radio 5 live.
"I plan on playing for sure but don't know the exact situation there now."
He added: "I need to get a little bit more information first before making a decision."
Zika virus outbreak began in Brazil a year ago but transmitted to more than 60 countries and territories.
In the letter, the scientists say that though Zika's symptoms are mild it causes babies to be born with abnormally small heads and may also cause a rare and sometimes fatal neurological syndrome in adults.
Along with Murray, Golfers Rory McIlroy, Danny Willett and Shane Lowry have shown their concerns regarding the virus, while Fiji's Vijay Singh and Australians Adam Scott and Marc Leishman already having pulled out.
However, renowned tennis player Novak Djokovic said cancelling the Games would be "unthinkable".
"For the moment I'm planning to play. Nothing is changing. But let's see what happens," said Serb.
