According to recent reports, the season finale shown lately hints are Nina Dobrev and Ian Sommerhalder coming face to face again in the show's eighth season. As per these reports, the call that Ian Sommerhalder received in the season 7 finale as Damon was by Nina Dobrev.

Based on these reports, it is safe to assume that Nina Dobrev is all prepared to resurrect Elena in "The Vampire Diaries" season 8." It is also possible that rather than ending season 8 with a series finale, there might just be a season 9 on the horizon.
