Twitter To Team Up With Foursquare For Making Tweets More Relevant
Twitter is reportedly teaming up with Foursquare to make tweets not just timely but also relevant and interesting.
According to a report from Business Insider, Twitter plans to add a location layer to the platform and these geo-based features could roll out as soon as in the first quarter.
The report added that Twitter is independently staffing up the location department as well. The company has already hired a geo lead from Foursquare and there are six other geo engineering job listings on its website.
As of now, Twitter's location features are limited. The service is only capable of determining where a user is when he or she signs up. Determining where each tweet originated could be a powerful tool for Twitter.
Foursquare has been operational since 2009. The service let users "check in" to locations and discover the city around. However, recently it got split into two separate apps - Swarm for "check-ins" and Foursquare app for local search and recommendations based on users' likes and dislikes.
At an analyst event, Twitter expressed its interest for integrating geo-based features into the service, hoping that this would enhance its service by providing context to tweets. The company added that location information could help users find tweets from the places they care about.
Comments/responds are yet to be received from either of the company.
