Barcelona Retain La Liga Title as Luis Suarez Finishes as The Top Scorer
When this weekend's La Liga game week commenced, there was only one thing on everyone's mind and that was whether Barcelona would drop points away at Granada to give their arch rivals Real Madrid a chance to win the title. However, no such drama took place as the Catalan giants dispatched lowly Granada with a thumping 3-0 victory and in the process claimed their 4th La Liga title in six years; a truly stupendous achievement considering the sort of teams Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have assembled.
It is a testament to the sort of resolve and resililence that the team has mustered together over the past few weeks, following their slump, that they scored 24 goals without conceding a single goal in the last 5 league games of the season. To be absolutely clear, their opponents might have been in the hunt but it never looked like Barcelona would slip further and hand Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid the advantage that they needed. In their last game against Granada, Barcelona could not afford to drop any points but any nerves were settled mid way through the first half when Luis Suarez scored the first goal of the game and from then on it was a party for the Catalans as the Uruguayan completed his hattrick and a 3-0 rout of their opponents to lift the title. In the process, Luis Suarez also ended up as the top scorer in the Spanish La Liga with a total of 40 goals, ahead of Messi, Neymar, Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Benzema which goes to show his class as a goal scorer of extraordinary talent.
However, it is also important to point out that the club's most iconic player Lionel Messi might have not had one of his vintage seasons but still scored 26 goals in the league as Barcelona confirmed their supremacy over their rivals two years in a row. Andres Iniesta, shared his thoughts on the victory with the media and said, "We have suffered until the end but it is glorious, to win six league titles in eight years with the same style".
