‘Game of Thrones’ News Update: Is Spectacular CGI the Reason behind Short Seasons 7 and 8?

The Season 6 of 'Game of Thrones' has become three episodes old and now HBO's epic fantasy drama is slowly moving towards its finish line. The current season has 7 more episodes left and the upcoming two seasons will have altogether 13 episodes as was announced by showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

According to reports, the duo had also indicated at a short two-year frame within which the seasons would be wrapped up. And this was later confirmed when Michael Lombardo, HBO's programming head, also admitted to the time frame while agreeing that he would love it if the series ran for another six years.

However, no reason was given by anyone and now a fan has come up with a delightful theory which also seems credible enough to be accepted. Cassidy Freeze says that the shortened seasons are a bid to put in awesome visuals which would not have been possible if the regular 10 episodes formula was repeated, like the previous six seasons.

She conjectures that HBO wants to utilize the $100 million budget per season to create an epic CGI (computer generated imagery) that would involve dragons, white walkers and thrilling battles. If they cut short the regular 10 episodes formula, they will have more money to splurge on the visuals and imageries that are one of the prime attractions of the show apart from the power packed performances and exciting storyline.

And, fact remains that classic CGI requires big budget. One needs to hire skilled professionals and invest a good deal of time to produce those amazing effects. Also, if the theory about Jon Snow being the son of Lyanna and Rhaegar comes out to be true, it is very possible that the end will include breathtaking battle scenes with the dreadful dragons.

Well, fans can only hope that the end is as fascinating as the beginning and the middle. Of course, special effects look wonderful, story and performances always precede the glamour and gimmicks.
