The Los Angeles Kings defenseman, Slava Voynov will stand trial on a felony charge of domestic abuse. According to the Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Hector Guzman, there was enough evidence surrounding the case to allow it to move forward.

"There's evidence to suggest prior domestic violence," the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office lead prosecutor, Frank Dunnick, said, reported by the Los Angeles Times.

Voynov, who has been suspended by the NHL with pay since Oct. 19, was charged with one felony count of "corporal injury to a spouse with great bodily injury" last month, ESPN reported. During the preliminary hearing on Monday in Torrance, CA, details regarding the abuse were revealed.

Officer Gregory Wiist from the Redondo Beach Police Department testified that Voynov had punched, kicked and choked his wife, Marta Varlamova, in their home back in October. The officer added that that the scene was bloody and Varlamova had appeared to be scared.

"He threw her to the ground multiple times. On the ground, he repeatedly kicked her all over her body in addition to choking her approximately three times," Wiist said. "She was crying, sobbing. I saw tears running down her face. She was an emotional wreck."

Wiist stated that Varlamova told him during the night of the incident that her husband had hit her while they argued at a Halloween party. Varlamova had said that Voynov continued to hit her when they returned to their Redondo Beach home.

The reports added that Varlamova needed eight stitches above her left eye for a three-centimeter laceration. These reports stated that the wound was caused after Voynov pushed her into a flat-screen television.

Voynov was arrested at the hospital when the medical personal called the police. Voynov has maintained his innocence. His wife has stated, via her personal attorney, that the incident was an accident and does not want her husband to be charged. At the time of the incident, the couple had been married for two months.

Earlier this month, the NHL fined the Kings $100,000 for allowing Voynov to practice with the team.

He is set to be arraigned on Dec. 29. If found guilty, Voynov could face up to nine years in state prison.
