NBA Rumors: Association Admits Referees' Errors in Spurs-Thunder Game
The finale of the Thunder-Spurs Game 2 of the semi-finals was pure anarchy. There were too many mistakes from both teams including the referees who officiated the game.
Swallowing its pride, NBA has just admitted that its referees failed to make 5 calls in the controversial 13.5-second finish according to its official two-minute reporting on what transpired that night.
For pundits and basketball fans alike, the Spurs fell victim to an unfortunate incorrect non-call by referee Marc Davis who failed to call an offensive foul on Thunder guard Dion Waters as he obviously hit Spurs Manu Ginobili with his elbow while attempting to inbound the ball.
In a twisted fate, San Antonio was not awarded the possession of the ball in a razor-thin game with only 13.5 seconds left on the clock. The hardcourt descended into chaos when Waiters threw a wild lob into the mid-court.
"Waiters foul on Ginobili was the worst missed call in playoff history," remarked Hall of Famer Magic Johnson as he tweeted his observation after scrutinizing the game, The Guardian reported.
Here is a summarized overview of the five official non-calls the NBA refs missed in the last 13.5 seconds of game as compiled by SB Nation:
1. Manu Ginobili steps over the line defending Dion Waiters' inbounds pass- Ginobili's foot clearly crossed the inbounds line- In the last two minutes of the game, this infraction is an automatic technical foul.
2. Dion Waiters fouls Manu Ginobili- Lead referee Ken Mauer and the NBA's referee association both admitted they had never seen a similar play, but it seems obvious that a player reaching out and shoving another player is a foul.
3. Patty Mills holds Steven Adams- A foul away from the ball before the ball is inbounded in the final two minutes results in two shots and possession for the team that was fouled, so if this was called, the Thunder could've taken a three-point lead and inbounded again.
4. Kawhi Leonard holds Russell Westbrook- A Spurs player restricted a Thunder player from getting open.
5. Serge Ibaka grabs LaMarcus Aldridge while shooting- There was a lot of banging and bumping under the rim in the final seconds of the game.
As a result of the debacle that followed the final 13.5 seconds of the game, many analysts, observers, and teams have demanded to have the three referees, namely Ken Mauer, Sean Corbin, and Marc Davis barred from officiating postseason games from this point forward.
"Mayer, Corbin, and Davis are good refs, and by no means should they be blackballed by the league going forward, but the NBA can't, in good conscience, put any of the three on the floor again these playoffs," wrote Dieter Kurtenback for Fox Sports.
"Trust in their decision-making abilities have been compromised, and it would be foolhardy for the NBA to compromise their product."
