Buttonless Fingerprint Scanner Beneath Display Introduced By LG
Now here is an exciting new innovation---LG Innotek's buttonless fingerprint scanner.
It enables users to open their smartphones or anything their fingerprints need to complete in a device, without having to rub a particular fingerprint recognition button.
The invention has exciting potential while it will create a paradigm shift in smartphone design. So far, fingerprint readers have required a particular region for their use. Samsung, Apple, and other companies build them into the home button on the front or the power button on the back, or on the side----somewhat like Googe's Nexus or Sony's Xperia.
But now, as these sensors can be integrated into the glass, the designers can create their phones in such a way that exterior signs of sensors can be done away with.
However, the point is not the aesthetics. As fingerprint readers have always needed to be strong on the outside of the device, it has now gone under the surface. The sensor is not so likely to be scratched while the design of the phone also does not need to accommodate the sensors.
"The new module is expected to drastically reduce any smartphone malfunctions, as it does not require a specific button for fingerprint recognition," said an LG spokeswoman. "We are in talks with some handset manufacturers to commercialize the new modules within the year."
On the other hand, LG warns that the scanners have a false acceptance rate of 0.002 percent. It is not too clear how fast the scanner can recognize a user's fingerprint. A scanner on the surface of a device can read your fingerprint directly, which is something that a scanner underneath the surface does not permit.
Reports say that the first phones with fingerprint scanners beneath the display's glass are coming out in the second half of 2016.
