Goodbye ‘O Captain’: Robin Williams' Passing is Mourned By All
Robin Williams, the Oscar-winning comedian who touched several hearts with his commanding performances, passed away at his house in California Tuesday morning of a suspected suicide.
His death has led to an outpouring of sadness and shock. Tributes started coming in for the "Dead Poet's Society" actor.
"Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time," Williams' publicist issued a statement confirming the news.
President barrack Obama sent his condolences in a statement:
"Robin Williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny, a president, a professor, a bangarang Peter Pan and everything in between. But he was one of a kind. ... The Obama family offers our condolences to Robin's family, his friends and everyone who found their voice and their verse thanks to Robin Williams."
Fellow actors from the industry also grieved Williams' sudden passing.
"I could not be more stunned by the loss of Robin Williams, mensch, great talent, acting partner, genuine soul," Steve Martin tweeted.
"Robin and I were great friends, suffering from the same little-known disease: depression. I never could have expected this ending to his life, and to ours with him. God bless him and God bless us all for his LIFE! I cannot believe this," comedian Chevy Chase said in a statement.
Williams was one of the most celebrated actors of Hollywood. He went on to achieve several academy award nominations and won his sole Oscar for his role as a therapist in "Good Will Hunting."
Before his death, Williams just wrapped up his role as Theodore Roosevelt in the third installment of "Night At a Museum." He was last seen onscreen opposite Annette Bening in the indie film "The Face of Love," reports InsideMovies.com.
The Marin County sheriff's office revealed that the death was due to asphyxia and an investigation was underway, according to The New York Times.
