Xiaomi Told To Stop Importing And Selling Handsets In India
Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has been asked to stop selling phones in India following a patent dispute.
The order was issued by New Delhi court in response to a complaint from Ericsson.
Ericsson has accused Xiaomi of using patented technologies without permission. According to the complaint, Xiaomi is using eight of Ericsson's technology without any license.
The order to stop sales was imposed on e-commerce website Flipkart - the company that distributes Xiaomi phones within India.
Xiaomi and Flipkart have been told to produce information about how many handsets have been sold in India since July. The next hearing will take place on 5th February 2015.
"India is a very important market for Xiaomi and we will respond promptly as needed and in full compliance with Indian laws. Moreover, we are open to working with Ericsson to resolve this matter amicably," said Xiaomi India Head, Manu Jain.
Ericsson had also sued Samsung in 2012 for infringing on its 'voice transmission, touchscreen functions and network efficiency' patents which was resolved only this year with a cross-licensing agreement and Samsung paying out $650 million plus royalties to Ericsson.
Despite being just four years old, Xiaomi as a company is growing rapidly. This year it became the best-selling smartphone brand in China, dethroning Samsung.
