Former VP Dick Cheney Calls Senate Report On Torture 'Crap'
Former Vice President Dick Cheney has called the senate report on US interrogation tactics during Georg Bush's presidency "full of crap."
In an interview with Fox News on Wednesday he said , "It did in fact produce actionable intelligence that was vital in the success of keeping the country safe from further attacks."
The report has outlined some of the extreme measures used by the Central Intelligence Agency to interrogate terror suspects like water boarding, fake executions, rectal rehydration and beatings.
The report has not been released fully but a summary was released on Tuesday and Cheney claimed to have read just parts of it.
In the interview, when asked specifically about some of the tactics used he denied being in the know of what specific methods were used. He added that he had no regrets about the tactics used after the Sept. 11, 2001, al Qaeda attacks.
"I think what needed to be done was done," Cheney said. "I think we were perfectly justified in doing it. And I'd do it again in a minute."
He also clarified that President Bush was aware of the interrogation methods being use contrary to what the report had put out that they were undertaken without the persident's knowledge. Cheney said. "He knew everything he needed to know and wanted to know about the program."
While the torture report has been dominating headlines with many questioning the extremities and human rights violations and credibility of the nation; Cheney beleives people have lost sight of the context.
According to him, after Spetember 11, these measure were necessary. Also having some of the most nototious terrorists in custody, what were we supposed to do "not kiss them on both their cheeks" but interrogate them, he said.
Asked whether the ends justify the means when it comes to brutal interrogations, Cheney said, "absolutely."
