Long time Manchester United midfield anchorman Michael Carrick could be on his way out of the club if reports in The Sun are to be believed and he could be back in London next season with West Ham United if a deal is concluded in this summer's transfer window. Manchester United are in the midst of a disappointing season in which they have not been able to reach the heights that they would have liked under manager Louis van Gaal's second season in charge and a huge squad overhaul is in being planned in order to build a squad that could live up to the expectations of United fans. In a season in which, United played uninspiring, bland football and recorded their worst goal tally in 25 years, the midfield is thought to be one of the bigger problem areas due to the inability of the players to create clear cut chances at a regular basis.

Michael Carrick, who joined Manchester United in 2006 has been one of the finest midfielders in the league and has been a great servant of the club but at 34, his powers as a midfielder has declined and United are looking to offload the player as they look for new midfielders in the summer transfer window. Carrick will be out of contract in the summer having signed a one year extension before the start of the 2015-16 season and talks about a new contract have not been fruitful.

West Ham wwant to take advantage of the situation and are considering making him an offer for a one year extension. The London club are in the reckoning for a Europa League spot and believe they could tempt Carrick with a one year contract. West Ham representatives believe that Carrick could be a good replacement on Alex Song, who will no longer be a part of the squad from next season onwards. The 'Hammers' are moving to the Olympic Stadium in London next season and would be looking for a higher placed finish, which is why a move for one of the Premier League's most experienced central midfielders could prove ot be a very shrewd move.
